A New CAST Paper
Although both the Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority have concluded that meat and milk from cloned animals are safe, public perceptions about animal biotechnology continue to have an impact on current and potential applications of existing and future technologies. To address these and other pressing issues regarding the purpose and methods of animal biotechnology, CAST is releasing a new paper, Ethical Implications of Animal Biotechnology: Considerations for Animal Welfare Decision Making. This is the final part--Part 9--of the CAST series Animal Agriculture's Future through Biotechnology. (June 2010)

As it did in 1973 when Dr. Norman E. Borlaug wrote CAST Paper No. 1, agricultural policy continues to play a key role in issues that influence daily life. This current Issue Paper, Agricultural Productivity Strategies for the Future: Addressing U.S. and Global Challenges, is an update of Dr. Borlaug's paper and includes a preface from him. It is a forthright appraisal of contemporary and future challenges facing U.S. and world agriculture. The authors address several key issues and indicate that the convergence of so many challenges at one time is unprecedented. (January 2010)

On September 13, 2010, Dr. John Bonner of CAST hosted a morning event in the United States Department of Agriculture Whitten Building with Dr. Jerry Fruin (left) presenting the latest installment of CAST's series regarding the convergence of agriculture and energy. The fourth paper, Infrastructure Considerations for Biomass Harvest, Transportation, and Storage, focuses on the logistics needed to make the biofuels program a success.
